Toward a Global Shift: Seeding the Field of Collective Change

(PS1) Indigenous Wisdom and Contemporary Challenges: Curanderismo in the 21st Century—Elena Avila

Send to friendPrinter-friendly version

Curanderismo, the traditional folk medicine of Mexico, is based on the belief that the body, soul, spirit, and emotions have equal importance and are intertwined in maintaining health. The key to this approach is the principle Corazon cura Corazon—Heart heals Heart. Integrating Curanderismo with Western medicine, Elena will demonstrate limpias, (spiritual cleansings), platicas, (heart to heart talks) and the use of soul retrieval for the treatment of Susto (fright). Please bring pictures of yourself when young, of ancestors that have passed, of parents, children, and other loved ones. Power objects, drums, and rattles are also welcome for this experiential session.

Elena Avila, RN, MSN Curandera, is a first-generation Chicana, born in the barrios of El Paso, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas with a bachelor of science in nursing, Elena obtained her masters degree from UT in 1981 and specialized in mental health. She began her research into Curanderismo in 1974, gradually incorporating native folk healing into her work as a nurse.
